Most Important Things you as a Migrant should do before you land in Australia (10 Tips for Migrants)

Do you know what you should do, or what you should be ready to take up when you arrive in Australia?

Here are some secrets, very valuable points to consider!

  1. Get a Tax File Number (TFN). Can be done online. www.ato.gov.au. It takes approx 14 days for them to send TFN.
  2. Register with Medicare. This will have to be done in person. Medicare covers doctor’s charges for all illnesses for free. If medicine is prescribed to be purchased from the pharmacy it will be an out-of-pocket expense. If you are hospitalized in a govt hospital – everything is free. This doesn't cover dental and eyes. And if you don't have PR (Permanent Residency), you should apply for a private Medicare. This seems unnecessary, but if you have to undergo a medical issue it would be great to have.
  3. Open a Bank Account. Make sure you  Inform the TFN to the bank once you receive it, otherwise they will deduct WHT (Withholding Tax) from the account. Once the accounts are opened the rest is operated online. Going to the bank for transactions incurs an additional charge so the best is to do everything online.
  4. Register with Centrelink. They will also require you to have the TFN. You will be registered with the family assistance office from which you receive Family Tax Benefit Part A and B and Rent Assistance.
